Abstract

751,299. Pressure-relieving devices for fluids; valves. CHENILLAT, M. R. June 22, 1954, No. 18258/54. Class 135. A device for damping water hammer in a hydraulic line comprises a tube 2 terminating in a convergent nozzle 10 through which the liquid passes, an annular damping chamber 4 around the tube and terminating in a convergent-divergent nozzle facing the nozzle 10, and the tube communicates with the chamber through the gap between the two nozzles. The pressure produced by a water hammer shock is absorbed by the air cushion in chamber 4. When normal flow takes place, air is drawn in through a non-return valve 12 to replenish the cushion as a suction is produced in the chamber due to the venturi effect at 11. In modifications, the pressure due to the water hammer is applied to a spring-loaded piston slidable over the tube 2.
