Abstract
746,607. Fluid-actuated valves. AVERYHARDOLL, Ltd. Jan. 12, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 909/54. Class 135. [Also in Group XVII] A valve device for automatically cutting off the flow of fluid to a container 1 when a predetermined level is reached therein comprises a valve 13 opened by a hand lever 7 against the action of a spring 10 and a piston 4 operatively associated with the valve and having a larger effective cross-sectional area than the valve, one face of the piston being exposed to the depression product by the flow of fluid on the downstream side of the valve and the other face being connected to the container at the predetermined level and also to the main supply duct at a point on the downstream side of the valve. The valve 13 and piston 4 are arranged in casing 3 divided into two chambers 16, 17 by the piston. When the valve is open, a negative pressure arises in the chamber 17 whilst fluid is flowing. The chamber 16, however, is substantially at atmospheric pressure until the lower end 9 of the pipe 6 is immersed whereupon due to the connection 18 a negative pressure exists in the chamber 16 also and the valve closes under the influence of the inlet pressure and the spring 10. The main supply duct comprises rigid tubes 8, 20 connected by a flexible pipe 5. The pipe 6 also has a flexible section and has branches 15, 18 leading to the chamber 16 and the tube 20 respectively. The pipe 6 may be arranged coaxially within the pipe 5. In this case the tube 8 which carries the pipe end 9 partly within it is coupled to the pipe 5 by a bayonet-type connection, and the branch 18 is replaced by a hole in the piston 4.
