Abstract

766,447. Filling tanks. SELF-PRIMING PUMP & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and STEVENS, G. C. Feb. 17, 1955 [Feb. 17, 1954], No. 4706/54. Class 21. An arrangement for filling a fuel tank in a system wherein a booster pump 20, Fig. 1, in or adjacent the tank pumps fuel out through pipes 21 and 22, comprises an opening 26 in the pipe 22 leading to the inside of the.tank, and a two position valve 32 which closes the opening 26, as shown in broken lines, in response to the output pressure of the booster pump when fuel is pumped from the tank but which, when the booster pump is stopped and the tank is being filled through the pipe 22, is biased to a position shown in full lines, closing the flow path through the pump 20 and pipe 21 to permit the incoming fuel to pass into the tank through the opening 26. The valve 32 is biased to the position, shown by the spring 35 but according to a modification the opening 26 extends from the upper face of the pipe 22 and the valve 32 is then hinged at its upper end so that it may be normally biased downwardly by gravity to close the pipes 20 and 21. If the opening 26 is in the upper face of the pipe 22 it is coupled to a conduit terminating near the base of the tank. In Figs. 6 and 7, the fuel extracted from the tank by the pump 70 causes the valve 80 to rise and close the pipe 79 and the fuel then passes away through an outlet 73. When the tank is to be filled, the pump 70 is stopped and the valve 80 falls under gravity to close the pump 70 and permit the fuel entering through the pipe 73 to flow through the pipe 79 past a oneway valve 87 to a pipe 83 terminating in a float operated shut-off valve 86 near the top of the tank. When the tank is filled, the floatoperated shut-off valve 86 closes and the input of fuel is then'stopped. If the fuel is drawn off without the use of the pump 70 the valve 88 opens. Specifications 670,226, 697,749, 713,845, 731,671 and 731,672 [all in Group XXVI] are referred to.
