[Also in Group XVIII] A device for detecting low-level conditions in a tank c which may be a fuel tank on an aircraft comprises a shallow pressure chamber a having an inlet and outlet for connection to a pipe system b through which a liquid stream is continuously circulated by a pump, which may be the fuel feed pump of the aircraft. One side of the chamber is formed by a flexible diaphragm d which actuates a valve e serving to close the entrance of a pipe f when this becomes uncovered due, for example, to the surging of fuel in the tank, to prevent air being sucked into a centrifugal boost pump g supplying the fuel feed pump. Movement of the diaphragm may also actuate a low level alarm signal or set in motion a pump for refilling the tank. The operating pressure under the diaphragm is determined by a pressure-modifier serially connected in the liquid stream with the chamber a and comprising a body h having a passage i therethrough open to the liquid in which the modifier and the chamber a are immersed. So long as the parts a, h remain wholly immersed the kinetic energy of the stream flowing across the gap i is absorbed as it encounters the liquid in the gap so that the pressure in chamber a is insufficient to lift the diaphragm d. If the level drops below the part h the energy of the stream entering the chamber a is sufficient to exert the pressure on the diaphragm required to lift it to close the pipe f or to actuate the alarm signal or the level control means referred to above.
