Abstract
1,157,767. Priming centrifugal pumps. H.J. GODWIN Ltd. Feb. 22, 1968, No. 8706/68. Heading F1C. A pump is primed by withdrawing air from the pump inlet duct into a vent passage by passing air under pressure through the vent passage to entrain the air. In the centrifugal pump shown, an ejection 10, which may be energized by a compressor 15 driven by the electric motor or I. C. engine which drives the pump, withdraws air from the suction chamber 5 of the pump to a vent passage 7, a non-return valve in the pump outlet duct preventing air from being drawn therethrough in a direction towards the pump. The small amount of liquid which passes through the vent passage 7 at times when the pump does not require priming may be allowed to run to waste. Alternatively, a chamber 11 may be provided, having a vent port 12 for the escape of the air and a port 13 under the control of a float valve 14 for the return of the liquid to the pump inlet duct 3.
