Abstract

1,210,058. Priming centrifugal pumps. H.J. GODWIN Ltd. March 26, 1969, No.15906/69. Addition to 1,157,767. Heading F1C. A pump assembly as claimed in the parent Specification, comprising a pump having an inlet duct and an outlet duct between which liquid may be pumped, a vent passage which communicates directly with the inlet duct and through which air may be withdrawn from the inlet duct, a non-return valve in the outlet duct to prevent air from being drawn therethrough in a direction towards the pump, and means for passing air under pressure through the vent passage so as to cause air from the inlet duct to be entrained therewith, whereby to effect withdrawal of air from the inlet duct and consequent priming of the pump, is additionally provided with means for cutting off or reducing the quantity of air under pressure supplied to the vent passage whenever the pump is primed. The additional means comprises a valve actuated by a diaphragm exposed, either directly or via a restrictor, to the pressure in the outlet duct. When the pressure in the outlet duct rises on completion of priming, the diaphragm closes the valve if the latter is located between the source of pressure air and the vent passage or opens the valve if the latter is located in a by-pass passage leading from the source of pressure air to atmosphere.
