In a self-priming centrifugal pump 1 having an impeller chamber 6 formed integrally with a coaxially disposed impeller bearing housing 7 of less radial dimension, an integral reservoir 9 for priming liquid is located at least in part beneath the said bearing housing and a port 13 is arranged to afford communication between the impeller chamber and the reservoir so that during priming liquid is directed on to the periphery of the impeller which is provided with a series of interruptions or irregularities 15 to increase turbulence on priming. The reservoir 9 extends upwardly as at 9a around the portion 6a of the impeller chamber 6 and, is connected to the impeller chamber by the port 13. In operation, liquid is drawn from the reservoir 9 through port 13 and is expelled by the impeller through upper port 12 back to the reservoir. Thus air is removed from the impeller chamber, creating a suction which draws liquid, from inlet 5, to the pump which then functions normally. When the pump is stopped sufficient liquid is retained in the reservoir to prime the pump when next started.
