Abstract
818,562. Centrifugal pumps. CARRUTHERS & CO. Ltd., J. H. Aug. 27, 1956 [May 25, 1955], No. 15045/55. Class 110 (1). A self-priming centrifugal pump comprises auxiliary impeller vanes 11 on the back of the main impeller, the passages between the vanes extending downwardly so as to enter the passages between the main impeller vanes 10 towards their outer ends, During priming, the vanes 11 draw water from a header tank 12, 12A which has previously been topped-up if necessary through a filler opening 15. The water, as it enters the end regions of the passages between the vanes 10, entrains air from the suction chamber 18 which is connected to the suction pipe through a non-return valve 21. The mixture of water and air enters the tank 12, 12A from the delivery pipe 22 through a valve 24, the air escaping through an airvalve (not shown) at the top of the tank. On completion of priming, a non-return discharge valve 27 opens and lifts the valve 24 into a partially closed position in which it allows some water to return to the tank 12, 12A during normal pumping to replace the water being pumped by the auxiliary vanes 11.
