Abstract
386,232. Centrifugal pumps. SCHULE, H. F. W. and GREVE, K. H., (trading as SCHULE & CO., F. W.), 16, Spitalerstrasse, Hamburg, Germany. June 28, 1932, No. 18243. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1931. [Class 110 (i).] A self-priming cen. trifugal pump has an impeller 7 in a casing 1 with a suction branch extending from the impeller eye 15 upwards to the top level of the casing. The wall of the casing closely follows the impeller circumference between the points 3, 10 so that at least one impeller channel is overlapped. The impeller projects into the discharge space so that a line 14 extended from the inner wall 6 of the delivery branch intersects the impeller as a chord. The arrangement of the suction branch enables water to be retained in the pump when it stops working. On the pump restarting, the water is thrown into the extended delivery space 2, 13 thus sealing the pump against the back flow of atmospheric air. The air pressure in the pump and the suction branch is consequently diminished. As the impeller blades travel up to the point 3, they collect water form the discharge chamber which partly fills the channels 11, 12 under the casing wall between the points 3, 10. After the blades pass the point 10 the water is thrown outwards and air is drawn in from the suction opening to escape through the water column in the delivery space 2. This action is repeated until water is drawn into the suction opening.
