Abstract
310,094. Jennings, I. C. Dec. 8, 1927. Centrifugal Sprengel pumps; starting, facilitating.-To facilitate the starting of a pump of the type having an eccentric of double eccentric casing and a rotor with blades or vanes arranged one behind the other around the circumference thereof and extending transversely across the pump chamber and in which a liquid is used to develop the pumping action, a substantial portion of the liquid is removed when the pump is stopped and is gradually restored when the pump attains normal speed. The Figure shows a vacuum pump driven by a slowspeed synchronous motor M. The liquid is supplied to an inlet port chamber 27 continuously through an open valve V and a valve v to regulate the rate of flow into the pump. When the pump stops, liquid flows out through the drain pipe 25 as the valve 26 is no longer subjected to a difference of pressure on account of leakage in the pump, on restarting, the valve 26 is closed automatically by the vacuum produced, and the pump is filled with liquid to the necessary quantity, the liquid thereafter passing to the discharge ports.
