Abstract

511,305. Centrifugal pumps. GILKES & GORDON; Ltd., G., and JACKSON, E. A. March 26, 1938, No. 9304. [Class 110 (i)] A centrifugal pump is primed by setting the runner in rotation, establishing a water seal on the outlet side of the pump, by hand or automatically, due to the rotation, and then exhausting the air space between the seal and the static liquid level of the supply. Fig. 2 shows one arrangement using a primary pump 9, preferably of the water-ring type, having its inlet 10 coupled to the inlet 2 of the main pump, sucking air from the pipe 2, and delivering it through a pipe 11. Sealing water is supplied to a gland 13. Valves may be used in the connections to the pump 9 and the pipe 14 may be led where desired. In another arrangement the priming pump is located within the casing of the main pump, the two runners having a common shaft. An additional water supply pipe leads from the main pump delivery to the inlet of the priming pump. A further modification in which the main pump delivers axially, has the priming pump arranged in the casing adjacent the water seal. The latter pump may have a double runner. Where the main pump is of the double-entry type, the suction of the priming pump is devided and connected to the two inlets. Alternatively the impeller disc of the main pump may be perforated so that air can pass through it. The invention may be applied to all types of centrifugal pumps.
