Abstract

670,206. Centrifugal pumps. KRIEGBAUM, O. July 27, 1949. No. 19781/49. Class 110(i). A deep-well pump set comprises a centrifugal pump driven by an axial-flow turbine which is supplied with working fluid by a main pump or other means located above ground, the exhaust from the turbine and the liquid delivered by the centrifugal pump being led upwards in a common pipe. A deep-well pump 6, Fig. 1, is driven by a turbine 5 which is supplied with driving water by a motor-driven pump 2. The water leaving the turbine joins the well water, as shown, or flows directly into the inlet of pump 6, or alternatively flows into the delivery pipe of pump 6. Fig. 4 shows a unitary construction of the deep-well pump and its driving turbine, wherein driving water is supplied through a pipe 7 to the turbine rotor 12 and passes by way of a bend 14 into a discharge pipe 8 to join the water lifted by a centrifugal impeller 13. Some of the water at the turbine inlet is diverted by way of a filter 19, duct 23 and the interior of the driving shaft 9 to lubricate a bearing 11, after which it exerts pressure on one side of a thrust balance disc 17. The other side of the disc is subjected to the pump inlet pressure. Water also passes through bearing 24 to lubricate it and then acts as a sealing liquid for sealing surfaces 20, 21, which are connected by ducts 22 through the rotor 12. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the unit is suspended from a stationary tube 26, and the pipe 8 may then be omitted. The inlet and outlet guides of the pump are formed in a single-piece removable' unit 25. The pump impeller may be inverted so that its axial thrust opposes its weight, and the back plate of the impeller may then act as the thrust balancing disc. The pump and turbine may both be of multistage construction, with the balancing means situated between them. A single main pump may supply driving liquid to a number of deep-well pump units. The main pump may be replaced by a hydraulic main.
