Abstract

1037. Michell, A. G. M. Jan. 14. [Addition to 21,611/11, Class 110 (i), Centrifugal and screw fans &c.] Working-fluid supply.-Consists in arranging the guide passages so that the fluid is propelled in looped paths. The apparatus is suitable for use as an extraction-pump for steam condensers and for pumping hot water &c. From the inlet 25, the fluid flows through an auxiliary pump wheel 9, guide passages 27, and a chamber 31 to the primary pump wheel 2 which delivers the fluid to a turbine 5 driving the wheel 9 and discharging through guide passages 32 which alternate with the passages 27 and communicate with the outlet chamber 33. The primary wheel 2 is secured to a driven shaft 1 ; the connected members 5, 9 may be mounted on a stationary spindle 11 lubricated by ducts 17, 18 and fitted with a thrust bearing 16. Curved plates 29, 30, secured either to the stator or the rotor, may be used to guide the fluid from the wheel 9 to the passages 27. The fluid may, alternatively, enter the primary wheel from the suction pipe, and flow successively through the turbine, one set of guide passages, the auxiliary wheel, a second intersecting set of guide passages, and thence to the outlet.
