Abstract
8440. Krank, A. April 24. Centrifugal pumps.-In order to utilize efficiently the high speed of rotation of a turbine or impactwheel, a centrifugal pump is mounted on the turbine shaft as shown in Fig. 1. The appliance may be used on a fire engine or the pressure water may be used for driving a turbine wheel or other secondary motor. The impact-wheel 1 is mounted on a shaft 4 and rotated by steam jets 9. The pump 12 is arranged in a chamber 11 with an inlet 14 and outlet 15. The shaft 4 is supported on longitudinally adjustable bearings 5, 6 which are laterally supported by triple sets of spring-pressed plungers 8. The lower bearing is automatically water-lubricated, and a pipe 22 leads from the pump chamber to the upper bearing to supply lubricating water. A substitute for stuffing-boxes consists of vaned discs 17, 23 carried by the shaft and adjoining partitions 16, 23 separating the chambers. The vane wheel 17, Fig. 4, is on the upper side of the pump wheel 12 and causes a pressure of water on the inner side of the partition joint, in excess of the pressure outside and so prevents leakage. The wheel 23 has an upper and lower set of vanes 24, and the lower vanes are the larger and produce an excess pressure, which prevents leakage past the shaft.
