Pumping-machines; balancing moving parts ; casings; leakage-preventing devices.-A centrifugal water pump has a volute casing with integral inlet and outlet connections, and a separate detachable head portion, consisting of an end wall of the pump housing and the adjacent wall of the impeller casing, which forms a water chamber connected to the inlet associated with the volute casing. The pump 33 may be driven by any suitable motor 10 mounted on a base 11 with marginal walls 20, 21 and a downward extension 26 with a bolt-hole 28 at one end and a flange 29 at the other end for attachment to the pump casing. The motor shaft 32 is supported in bearings in the casings 30, 31 rigidly connected to the main housing of the motor. The pump casing has two main parts; one consists of the volute 34, the outlet 40, and the inlet 37 into the radially projecting part 35; the other part consists of the wall 42 of the impeller casing and the end plate 41 of the pump housing. This end plate encloses a chamber 45 in communication with the inlet 37 through the opening 39. The volute casing carries a plate 60 forming a chamber 46 with another 49 below the level of the shaft. The impeller 53 is carried bv a stub shaft 54 and is held against the shoulder 56 by the nut 57. The shaft 54 has a cylindrical socket 58 in its outer end in which the end of the motor shaft 32 closely fits, the two shafts being held bv the screw 59. The pump shaft passes through an opening in the plate 60 provided with packing rings 63, 64 clamped by the bolts 67. A gland 68 may be used in the packing and is connected by a pipe 69, Fig. 5, to the volute in order to form a water seal. The propeller is maintained in hydraulic balance as equal water pressure acts on both sides of the exposed hub portion. A vent pipe is connected to the casing at the top of the chamber 46. The end plate 41 can be removed to expose the impeller by simply withdrawing the bolts and the impeller itself can be removed after the nut 57 has been taken off.
