Abstract

500,853. Centrifugal pumps; stuffing- boxes. WARMAN, C. H. June 28, 1938, No. 19101. Convention date, July 26, 1937. (Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v)] A centrifugal pump is provided with sealing means to prevent leakage of fluid between a rotary impeller and a fixed casing. The frame plate 2, pump casing 4 and cover 9 are held together by bolts 6 which have intermediate nuts which engage flanges on the casing 4. The pump has fin axial intake 14 and peripheral discharge ports 16. The boss of the impeller is screwed to the tapered end of a spindle 20 with a pulley 24 thereon. U-shaped, elastic, sealing-members are secured between the casing and the frame plate 2 and cover-plate 9, and engage the impeller. The seal members engage slopingly-recesaed surfaces 26 on the plates. The casing has an annular recess of constant cross-section communicating with the outlet branch ; the outer diameter is 1¢ or more times the diameter of the impeller. A plurality of expeller vanes 29 tapering outwardly, are provided on the exterior of the impeller to reduce the pressure on the elastic sealing- flanges. Specification 499,729 is referred to.
