Abstract

539,373. Centrifugal pumps. HAYWARD, TYLER & CO.,. Ltd., and HOWARD, G. P. E. April 20, 1940, No. 7158. [Class 110 (i)] In a centrifugal pump, leakage between discharge and suction is prevented by an annular weir plate 14 which bears closely on the eye of the impeller and has radial clearance at its periphery relatively to a fixed partition 10, against which it may be clamped by springs or a wall 8 of the discharge passage, as well as by the discharge pressure acting on the face adjacent the impeller. The hydraulic pressure may be increased by connecting a recess 15 in the other face with the suction side by means of a port 16. The passages 3, 3a between successive stages, have diffuser blades 5, 6. Rotation of the rings 14 is prevented by pins 28 in the partitions 10 engaging the rings with clearance. In its application to pumps of the open impeller type, the weir plate is slidably mounted by means of a boss on the balancing piston carried by the impeller shaft.
