A centrifugal pump adapted to function in either direction of rotation comprises an impeller with radial vanes arranged in a working chamber, and an inlet connection and an outlet connection each communicating with the working chamber by way of suction members and discharge members respectively, two suction members or discharge members each provided with at least one non-return valve being arranged at the respective sides of the impeller symmetrically with respect to a common plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the pump. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on lines II-II and III-III respectively of Fig. 1. In one direction of rotation of the pump impeller 12, Fig. 1, liquid entering by way of an inlet 8 passes through a pair of valves 9<SP>1</SP>, one only of which is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to a suction chamber 131, from which it passes by way of a port 20<SP>1</SP> to the region AC of circumferentially-extending pumping passages 15, 24. The axial depth of the passages 15, 24 increases from A to C, remains constant from C to D, and decreases from D to B, forcing the liquid through a port 22<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 1 and 3, and a pair of valves 26<SP>1</SP>, one only of which is shown in Fig. 1, to a discharge 30. In the other direction of rotation, liquid passes from the inlet 8 to the region BD of the passages 15, 24 by way of a suction chamber 13<SP>11</SP>, a pair of valves 9<SP>11</SP> and a port (not shown) similar to the port 201, and is discharged at the region AC through a port 22<SP>11</SP> and a further pair of valves (not shown) similar to the valves 26<SP>1</SP> and thence to the discharge 30.
