Abstract
537,720. Centrifugal pumps. UMPLEBY, F. Feb. 28, 1940, No. 3668. [Class 110 (i)) A centrifugal pump comprises several sets of vanes F, F1, F<2> on the impeller, separated by sets of fixed vanes H, L on the casing, the fluid passing from the centre of the impeller to its periphery. A propeller B in the inlet eye gives an initial whirl to the entering fluid. The adjacent faces of the blades are approximately parallel, while the other two faces of the passages are convergent, so that the passages get narrower from the centre to the periphery, as shown in Fig. 2. Small openings R are formed in the blades to reduce turbulence. Several pumping units as above may be arranged in series.
