Abstract
870,262. Axial-flow and centrifugal pumps. SCHOLL, M. Dec. 23, 1957 [Dec. 27, 1956; Oct. 9, 1957], No. 39796/57. Class 110 (1). The impeller of an axial-flow pump is located in a housing defining a flow duct or channel, and the impeller itself defines a centrifugal pump having a liquid flow passage extending to the outer wall of the impeller hub and having passages extending to the now duct or channel. In the pump shown, a two-stage axial-flow pump is formed by impeller blades 9 and 22 which are traversed successively by the liquid. Interstage turning vanes 21 may be adjustable. Either of the branehes 8, 10 may be used as the inlet, the other forming the outlet. A secondary liquid from a pipe 3 passes by way of ports 7 to the interior 5 of the impeller hub, and is impelled centrifugally by radial vanes 6, flowing outwardly through bores 12 in the vanes 9, 22 to join the main flow of liquid. The vanes 22 may be omitted, and either or both of the branches 8, 10 may be axially disposed. Auxiliary vanes may be provided on the end of the impeller hub to prevent leakage of pumped liquid into the interior 5. The bores 12 may be provided in tubes welded to the axial-flow vanes or may be omitted altogether.
