Abstract
884,507. Centrifugal compressors. ETABLISSEMENTS NEU S.A. DES. Sept. 1, 1960 [June 2, 1960], No. 30231/60. Class 110 (1). In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor, Fig. 5, each impeller 39 comprises a rotating diffuser 42 beyond the impeller blades 40. Further diffusion takes place in the part of the casing surrounding the impeller, comprising a cylindrical wall 49 and side walls 45, 46 which are widely spaced from the impeller to provide lateral spaces 47, 48 which minimize surging. The casing is continued by surfaces of revolution forming walls 51, 52, the annular space between the walls containing whirl-removing vanes 53 and a few radially-extending vanes 54. No conversion from velocity head to pressure head or vice versa occurs in this part of the casing. The multi-stage compressor shown in Fig. 1 is stated to be known. As before, each impeller is formed at its periphery with a rotating diffuser 5, and the side walls of the casing 6 are widely spaced from the impeller to provide lateral spaces 7, 8. The casing 6 is of volute form and is connected by an elbow 15 to the intake of the next stage.
