Abstract

733,533. Centrifugal pumps &c. SOC. ANON. DES ETABLISSEMENTS NEU. July 14, 1953 [Aug. 26, 1952], No. 19548/53. Class 110(1). In a centrifugal blower, compressor or pump, the impeller blades 2, Figs. 1 and 2, are enclosed between discs 3, 4 extending beyond the blades to form a rotary diffuser 5, and the impeller is contained in a volute 6, the sides 7, 8 of which are spaced from the discs by between one and two times the outlet width of the diffuser. Vortices are induced in the lateral spaces 11, 12 by friction and are stated to increase the pressure at low outputs. In addition, the pressure at the clearances 13, 14 is reduced, obviating the need for labyrinth packings. To reduce pumping action, the usual cut-off 18 is replaced by a curved portion 17, with a radius of the order of about <SP>1</SP>/ 10 of the radius of the impeller or the rotary diffuser. Instead of being rectangular, the cross-section of the volute may be circular or trapezoidal. The impeller blades, which may be of aerofoil or of laminar form, may each comprise an intake portion 42, Fig. 6, of cylindrical form with its axis disposed in the radial direction, merging tangentially at 44 into a flat portion 40. The impeller may be of the double-intake type, with either a single diffuser or a separate diffuser for each intake.
