696,007. Axial-flow compressors, pumps and turbines. AKTIESELSKABET BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASKIN-OG SKIBSBYGGERI. July 31, 1951 [Sept. 2, 1950], No. 18153/51. Classes 110(i) and 110(iii) A diffuser for an axially flowing medium in a turbine, compressor or pump comprises diffusion channels carried by a freely rotating wheel 9. The wheel 9 is joumaled at 18 on the shaft 16 of the working rotor 6 and carries thin laminar blades 8. It may run in the opposite direction to the rotor 6. The boundary layer may be removed by suction at the places where the interaction between the main flow and the boundary layer is least, as by providing communication between the diffuser wall and the annular passage 15 by way of holes 12 and a clearance 14. Further holes or slots for this purpose may be formed in the blades 8 or in the outer wall of the diffuser. This outer wall may, as shown, be part of the casing wall 10 or may comprise a shroud rotating with the blades 8. The flow may depart from the axial direction at the inlet and outlet of the diffuser. There may be several successive rotary diffusers running, it may be, at different speeds and in different directions.
