Abstract
1305431 Cooling turbines; axial-flow compressors BROWN BOVERI-SULZER TURBOMACHINERY Ltd 26 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969] 9445/70 Headings F1C F1G and FIT A cooling arrangement for the rotor 3 of a turbomachine, e.g. a gas or steam turbine or compressor, comprises axially extending cooling ducts 7<SP>1</SP> disposed beneath the roots 6 of at least the blades 4<SP>1</SP> of the highest pressure rotor stage and connected to an annular cooling fluid supply passage 8 defined between a part 9 of the rotor and a surrounding stationary housing 10 via feed ducts 13 in the rotor, the ducts 13 being in alignment with the ducts 7<SP>1</SP> but having greater cross-sectional flow area than the latter. The tops of ducts 13 are closed-off by cover segments 21 having roots 20 mounted in grooves 19 and the walls of the ducts 13 are rounded or bevelled at their entry ends 14, see Fig. 3 (not shown), to permit smooth flow of the coolant from passage 8 into ducts 13. Radial bores 30 in the segments 21 permit any dirt entrained in the coolant to be thrown out centrifugally into the working fluid duct 25. Leakage between the working and cooling flows is reduced by a labyrinth seal 26 on the inner surface of a stationary ring 22 surrounding the segments 21. The coolant may be air from a compressor when the turbomachine is a gas turbine forming part of a gas turbine plant.
