Abstract
780,240. Axial flow compressors and turbines. EGGLETON, F. Sept. 19, 1955, No. 26689/55. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). An axial flow compressor or turbine of two or more stages comprises a casing having a smooth internal surface and in the case of a turbine with a ring of nozzle blades at the inlet end and a rotor having a series of blades spaced around its circumference in which each adjacent pair of blades define a continuous generally axial passage through the annular space between the rotor and casing in which, in a compressor, the working fluid is alternately accelerated or retarded in a tangential direction or, in a turbine, retarded in the tangential direction in the first stage and then alternately accelerated and retarded in the tangential direction. The blades are formed by a continuous series of aerofoil-shaped portions positioned on alternately reversed curved axes or camber lines. The turbine, Fig. 2, consists of a series of nozzle vanes G1 and a rotor having the passages formed by the blades F1. The Specification sets out in detail the method by which the shape of the blade passages is determined.
