Abstract
712,523. Elastic-fluid turbines; axial-flow compressors. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 21, 1951 [March 3, 1950], No. 5500/50. Classes 110(1) and 110(3) In an annular duct of. an axial-flow compressor or turbine having an axial section with a mean centre line constituted by a first upstream rectilinear part 26 and a second downstream rectilinear part 28 inclined thereto with a guide vane assembly disposed there-between for imposing or removing swirl, the guide vane assembly comprises circumferentially distributed blades 29 each of which extends across the duct from the inner wall to the outer wall with its spanwise axis 29a inclined to a radius 29b from the duct axis through the point of intersection of the spanwise axis with the inner wall, at such an angle as to cause the fluid to flow on the downstream side of the assembly substantially parallel to the said second rectilinear part. The blades 29 are of uniform or variable aerofoil section and formed with tablets 33 which locate the blades circumferentially and abut shoulders formed by recesses cut in the duct. Each blade may be twisted about its spanwise axis to vary the magnitude of the radial velocity component at points along the blade.
