761,937. Compressors, pumps and turbines; gas turbine plant. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1954 [Aug. 21, 1953], No. 23425/54. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). A turbine, compressor, pump or the like comprises a rotor rotatably mounted within a casing and having primary blading thereon, secondary blading associated with the rotor, and passage means for contiguously conducting the flow of primary blading fluid and of secondary blading fluid and so positioned that the flow of secondary blading fluid forms a flow boundary layer thereabout. In the centrifugal compressor shown the impeller comprises a back-plate 16 carrying substantially radial blades 17 having their entry edges 18 bent in the direction of rotation. Axial-flow fan blades 30 are formed on a cylindrical ring 31 mounted on the entry edges 18. The centrifugal compressor blades 17 discharge into the usual volute 28 by way of diffuser blades 27, while the axial-flow fan blades 30 discharge through a passage 33 to an annular chamber 36 containing vanes 35 and thence to an outlet 40. A fairing cone 42 is supported from an annular wall 37 by struts 43. The main stream of air flowing through the inlet passage 41 to the centrifugal compressor flows concentrically within the annular stream of air flowing towards the axial flow fan. The annular stream forms a boundary layer which protects the main stream from disturbances caused by frictional drag on the wall 37. The centrifugal compressor may supply air for combustion in a gas-turbine plant, while the axial-flow fan supplies air to a heat exchanger for cooling lubricating oil. The centrifugal compressor may be operated as a centripetal air turbine, the axial-flow fan then drawing in air from the former outlet 40 and discharging it through the passage 41 to form a boundary layer around the discharge from the turbine. The air flowing to the fan may be used as a coolant in a heat exchanger. The invention may be applied to pumps and turbines operating with inelastic fluids or liquids.
