Abstract
673,796. Centrifugal pumps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 20, 1950 [Nov. 25, 1949], No. 28309/50. Class 110(i) In a circumferential-flow pump in which the discharge pressure bears a substantially fixed relation to rotational speed, the tendency for the pressure to increase as the viscosity of the pumped liquid decreases is compensated for by a byepass passage of small cross-sectional area and large wall area, whereby the amount of liquid bled off increases as the viscosity decreases. The pump described in Specification 673,780 is provided with a byepass passage 26b which is connected by ports 26a and 26c to the discharge and inlet ends respectively of the arcuate pumping chamber 32b. Alternatively, the recessed side wall 27a is continued radially inwardly, as at 32d, beyond the innermost portions of the impeller blades 5, or is extended axially outward. Either one of these two arrangements is used at both sides of the impeller. Slots extending axially through the impeller rim may replace the staggered blades 58.
