Fluid-friction apparatus; balancing moving parts.-A fluid-friction pump or motor comprises stator and rotor elements one of which is formed with grooves and the other with tongues engaging in the grooves. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the stator 12 is formed with grooves 3 and the rotor 13 with tongues engaging therein, the inlet and discharge pipe 5, 9 of the stator 12 opening into chambers 14, 17 at the ends of the rotor which communicate with passages in the rotor opening on opposite sides of the tongues. Fig. 6 shows an impeller 18 for a centrifugal pump in which the end thrust is balanced by the fluid pressure in an annular channel 20 due to the pumping action of tongues 24, 25 carried by a plate 21 and grooves 22, 23 on the impeller wall 19.
