Abstract
437,042. Meshing - screw pumps or engines. HUTCHINSON, A. C., Tower House, Orchard Hill, Bideford, Devon, and ALLEN SONS & CO., Ltd., W. H., Queen's Engineering Works, Bedford. May 4, 1934, No. 13484. [Class 110 (ii)] The pump or engine comprises a centre pumping rotor 2 with multiple threads, which meshes with two abutment screws 7, 8, in a casing 1 with inlet 9 and delivery 11 shaped as shown. The axial pressure on the rotor and abutment shafts is balanced by collars such as 12 on the shaft 3 which co-operates with a casing wall 13 to form a chamber 14 supplied by fluid from the delivery pipe. This fluid leaks away to a chamber 16 which communicates with the suction pipe. The shaft bearings 4, 5 have a series of pockets 31 to which pressure fluid is led. This fluid is adapted to absorb lateral bearing pressures on the various shafts. The abutment shafts have a similar arrangement provided in each bearing. The rotor and abutment threads on the inlet and outlet sides are tapered off to knife edges. An impeller 39 may be fitted in the inlet pipe to assist the fluid flow towards the pump. Radial guide vanes 40, 41, 45, 46 are provided. The bearing housings are shaped as shown to prevent turbulence in the fluid passing through the pump. The rotor and abutment shafts may be connected externally by helical gears. The threads on the rotor may be extended axially at both ends, beyond the rotor. A Pelton wheel type of turbine may be mounted on a shaft parallel to the shaft 3, and fed with excess fluid delivered by the screw pump. The threads on the rotor and abutments are convex and concave respectively. Packing strips may be provided in the threads.
