Abstract

478,146. Rotary pumps. DAVIDSON, W. W. Aug. 19, 1936, No. 22883. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1935. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary pump with a rotating cylinder A comprising parts 1, 2, 3, and a rotor B which is driven by a vane 26, fixed to the cylinder A, which slides and rocks in a packing piece 29. The cylinder has extensions 17, 18, which are supported on sleeves 7, 14, and the rotor is keyed to a shaft 13 which is driven by an electric motor D with an armature 22 fixed to the extension 18. Fluid to be pumped enters through a port 37 and passes up pass ages 35, 34, 31 to the pumping space S, and is delivered by way of a check-valve 33 into the interior of the sealed housing 9. The outlet 39 from the latter is protected by a filter 40 to prevent the escape of lubricant. Heat-radiating ribs 41 are provided. A second pump, see Fig. 3,' is placed in a counterbore 43 which extends into the rotor. The vane 26 is provided with an extension 46 which acts as the vane of the secondary pump and cooperates with an eccentric ring 47 carried by the head 2. This ring is eccentric to the shaft 13 but concentric with the cylinder A. The second pump may supply lubricant from a well 42 to the main pump, its shaft and bearings, and has an inlet 48 and outlets 49, 50. Oil is led to this pump through a passage 51 to a groove 52, through a passage 53 leading by way of a further passage 54 to the inlet 48. The outlet 49 leads to two chambers open to a groove 67 over which a delivery passageway passes once per revolution of the pump cylinder. A port 50 in the ring 47 allows oil to reach the shaft 13. The two pumps may be adapted to deal with the same fluid. In a modified arrangement the pump is arranged horizontally and driven from an external pulley through gearing. A further modification includes secondary pumps at each end of the main pump, arranged on a horizontal shaft. Spring- pressed abutments are carried by the main pump end covers and are rotated around a shaft upon which they bear.
