Abstract

244,176. Simonis, H. S. Sept. 12, 1924. Pumping-machines.-A submersible pumping unit has a turbine wheel k and centrifugal pump rotor j enclosed in a casing a with connection e, f on the top part and a suction opening b at the bottom guarded by a cylindrical strainer c. The water to drive the turbine k is passed down through a hose on the connection e, into the chamber and then through ports or nozzles to the wheel. The exhaust passes through the central passage m and ports n into the delivery space o of the pump. Water is drawn in through the suction b and discharged by the pump j through the chamber o and outlet f to, for example, the suction of a fire-engine pump. The turbine may have two or more wheels and may discharge into the suction side of the pump j or into an open suction hose. A foot valve may be removably connected in the connection f to enable the fire-engine pump and its suction pipe to be filled with water for starting purposes.
