Abstract

287,408. Marks, E. C. R., (Nash Fngineering Co.). Sept. 26, 1927, Pumping-machines; starting, facilitating.-A centrifugal water pump is primed by means of an air pump which is rendered ineffective when the head of water on the centrifugal pump rises to a predetermined point and is rendered effective again when the water head fails. The suction pipe 13 of the centrifugal pump 12 enters the lower part of the separating tank 10 which obtains its water supply through the inlet pipe 11. The priming air pump 20 is connected by pipes 21, 23 to the casing of the pump 12 and by a pipe 22 to the top of the tank. A chamber 30, connected between the pipe 23 and the tank, contains a float 32 which operates an air admission valve 31. Check valves 38, 25 are placed in the pipes 21, 23. The air pump 20 draws air from the centrifugal pump 12 at starting and also draws air from the tank 10 thereby causing the water level to rise in the tank. When this reaches the level X, X, the float 32 is lifted to open the valve 31 to admit air to the system so that the air pump is limited in its operation. When the level drops, the valve 31 is closed and the action of the air pump again becomes effective.
