Abstract
351,191. Centrifugal pumps. CARTER, R. B., 53, Park Place, New York, U.S.A. May 15, 1930, No. 15033. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1929. [Class 110 (i).] A centrifugal pump is primed by water which flows into the pump from a tank on the discharge side, the flow being controlled by a valve operated by the pump discharge. The tank 16 is supported above the pump 10 ; it is connected to the pump discharge by the duct 15 and to the byepass 18 on the suction side by a port 20. The suction pipe 14 enters the byepass 18 and has a valve 21 placed at its upper end. A valve mechanism 23, 24 controls the flow through the byepass. To start the pump the tank 16 and the byepass 18 are filled with water the pressure of which holds the valve 21 closed. When the pump starts to rotate the liquid is forced up through the duct 15, raises the valve 23 and closes the valve 24. The suction opens the valve 21 and air from the pipe 14 is drawn into the pump. With the cessation of liquid flow in the duct 15, the valve 23 drops and the valve 24 opens so that the mechanism occupies the position shown in Fig. 2. Water will now flow from the tank 16 into the byepass 18 and air will rise into the tank. The action is repeated until the pump is working normally. The valves 23, 24 may be at opposite ends of a pivoted lever, or they may be connected by links.
