A fluid system comprises a tank 2, Fig. 1, a pump 4 having an intake port 3 in communication with liquid in the tank and a discharge port for delivery of liquid through a conduit 5, 17, valve means 6 operative in response to variation in liquid pressure adjacent the downstream end of the conduit to vary the flow through the conduit, and pump anti-cavitation means 27, 28 operative in response to a decrease of liquid in the tank to a predetermined minimum level to conduct liquid pressure adjacent the upstream end of the conduit to operate the valve means to reduce or discontinue the flow of liquid from the downstream end of the conduit. In the preferred embodiment, the conduit supplies a fuel delivery nozzle 1 and the valve 6 has a main closure 7 controlled by a spring-loaded pilot valve 11 subjected to downstream pressure through a conduit 18. When the liquid in the tank falls to a predetermined level, fluid from a jet nozzle 27 enters a receiver 28 to operate a shuttle valve 24 and close both the main and pilot closures 7, 11. In a modified arrangement, the valve means are incorporated in a by-pass line between the delivery conduit and the tank. Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment in which a by-pass valve 6<SP>1</SP> controlled by the pressure at a point 58 in the delivery conduit and by the level in the tank is provided in addition to a valve 57<SP>1</SP> controlled by a valve 70 which requires a lever 71 to be held in an actuated position to conduct air under pressure to the pilot valve 60. If the lever 71 is released, both pilot valves are closed to shut off flow through the delivery line and open the by-pass. Only the by-pass valve 6<SP>1</SP> is operated, however, in response to a fall in liquid level causing an actuator 81 to shift a valve 74 and connect a chamber 19 to atmosphere. The by-pass valve may be omitted and the valve in the delivery conduit made responsive to liquid level and downstream pressure as well as to operation of the valve 70.
