Abstract

1,165,821. Liquid seals. JAMES HOWDEN & CO. Ltd. 4 March, 1968 [4 March, 1967], No. 10348/67. Heading F2V. A liquid seal for a gas pipe-line comprises a vessel 4 for liquid, an upright partition wall 6 in the vessel forming a U-passage, an inlet duct 2 projecting downwards into one limb 12 of the U-passage to dip into the liquid, an outlet duct 3 extending from the top of the limb, pressure reduction means 16 assoiated with the outlet duct and operable on flow of gas through the duct, and a conduit between the pressure reduction means and the top of the other limb, the arrangement being such that the gas flow in the outlet duct causes the liquid level to fall to a position clear of the bottom of the inlet duct to permit flow of gas above the liquid to the outlet duct and on stoppage of the gas flow the liquid seals the inlet duct. The inlet duct has a rectangular nose portion 2A which projects downwards into a tube 6 forming the partition wall and containing a rectangular baffle plate 18. A Venturi may be used to lower the pressure in the limb 11 and to cause a corresponding fall in liquid level in the limb 12. The Venturi 16 may be disposed within the outlet pipe in parallel with a large orifice plate or it may be replaced by vortex-producing vanes. In a further modification, the outlet pipe projects into the limb 12 of the U-passage and is surrounded by the inlet pipe which is connected directly to the top of the limb, the gas conduit extending across the annular space between the pipes to a throat in the outlet pipe.
