Abstract

1,024,787. Emptying tanks. J. H. CARRUTHERS & CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1962], No. 41288/62. Heading B8T. [Also in Division F1] A suction pipe 5 has an entry port 9 above the level of the entry opening 11A of the pipe, the port being closed by a float valve 13 when the liquid level falls to a predetermined level. The flow from the port 9 through the duct 8 is arranged to merge smoothly with the flow in the reduced diameter bore 7, and radial vanes 17 are provided to resist the formation of vortices. The valve 13 is of O-section resiliently compressible material inflated with air. The pumping rate is reduced when the port 9 is closed to avoid excessive friction losses.
