Abstract
926,091. Water supplies. SULZER FRERES S.A. Jan. 23, 1961 [Feb. 10, 1960], No. 2646/61. Class 68 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] A pumping plant having a pressure pipe line 3, Fig. 1, with a non-return valve 5 at the pump end thereof is provided with a device for protecting the pipe line. The device comprises a surge tank 7, connected to the line 3 by a pipe 6 fitted with a non-return hinge valve 8 and a bypass 10 round the valve 8 fitted with a valve 12 loaded by a weight 11. If pressure in the pipe line 3 drops below that in the tank 7, liquid will immediately flow past the valve 8 into the pipe line 3. Before liquid can flow from the pipe line 3 to the tank 7, the pressure difference must exceed a predetermined value dependent on the weight 11. The valve 8 or the valve 12 is provided with a throttling aperture 9 to prevent oscillations being set up in the system. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, a single valve member 21 is provided to replace the two valves 8, 12. The valve member 21 is pivoted at 20 and is loaded by a weight 24 when flow is from right to left, but a stop 25 prevents the weight acting when the flow is from left to right.
