Abstract

865,470. Valves. HILL PORTER (NEWCASTLE) Ltd., and TALBOTT, A. C. April 16, 1959 [April 18, 1958], No. 12437/58. Class 135. An hydraulic pressure-relief valve designed to avoid cavitation e.g. when used in a yielding hydraulic prop, comprises a valve body in which a spring-loaded valve member is pressed against a sharp-edged circular hole or a conical surface in a valve seating, while attached to the valve member is a flow-spreader plate having a diameter at least twice the diameter of the contact circle of the valve member with its seating or the diameter of an open hole through which the liquid passes immediately before the spreader plate and spaced above a part of the valve body to form a thin space through which the liquid passes when the valve is open into a larger space above the spreader plate which is pressurized by an outlet restriction or by the spring-loaded valve member itself to prevent cavitation in the valve. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the spring- loaded ball valve member d is carried by a flow spreader disc g spaced above a part of the valve body a to form a thin space h, the relieved liquid from an inlet c passing the disc into a larger space i above the plate and thence out through a pressurizing leak valve j, a pressure difference thereby erected across the disc tending to augment the spring load and re-seat the valve when the pressure at the seat orifice e<SP>1</SP> falls slightly below that required for opening the valve. Pressure surges lifting the pressurizing valve j cause a leaky plunger part of this valve to close slots k so as to provide only a slow leak. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a flow spreader plate q placed slightly above an open flow orifice n<SP>1</SP> of an inlet n carries a spring-loaded conical valve-member o which obturates a seat opening leading out of the larger space s above the plate, so that the relief valve member o itself forms a restriction pressurizing the space s and avoiding cavitation beneath the spreader plate q.
