Abstract

827,765. Fuel supply systems. NEW PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1957, No. 4920/57. Class 7(3) [Also in Group XXIX] In a fuel supply system comprising a plurality of tanks 25...27 containing individually operable pumps 30...32, the delivery pipes 21...23 of which are interconnected and connected to the carburetter supply pipe 20, the interconnections between the pipes 21...23 consist of shuttle valves 28, 29, containing a pressureoperated shuttle 56, Fig. 2, which opens the delivery pipe of the pump delivering fuel and closes the remaining delivery pipes. The pumps 30...32 are controlled individually by switches 39...41 connected to the ignition circuit and the delivery pipes 22, 23, are connected by the valve 28 to a pipe 24 which is led with pipe 21 to the valve 29 having its outlet 20 connected to the carburetter. Each valve 28, 29 comprises inlets 50, 51, Fig. 2, and a floating shuttle 56 which in its end positions connects one inlet to the outlet 49 and closes the other inlet by resting against seats 63, 64, and in its intermediate position connects both inlets to the outlet 49. Hence if, as in Fig. 1, the engine is operating on tank 27 with pumps 30, 31 inoperative, the pressure in pipe 23 moves the shuttle 56 of valve 28 to close pipe 22 and connect pipe 23 to the pipe 24 which similarly becomes connected through valve 28 to the pipe 20. Shortly before tank 27 is emptied switch 40 is closed to operate pump 31 and the increase in pressure in pipe 22 moves the shuttle of valve 28 to an intermediate position in which both pipes 22, 23, are connected to pipe 24 until tank 27 is emptied when the shuttle moves to seat 64, Fig. 2, to close the pipe 23. A similar action occurs in valve 29 when tank 26 is exhausted and pump 30 is brought into operation. When the engine is at rest one or other of the tanks is always in communication with the pipe 20, permiting the float chamber 11 to drain.
