Abstract
729,941. Hydraulic drop hammers. LANGENSTEIN UND SCHEMANN AKT.-GES. Oct. 15, 1952 [Oct. 29, 1951], No. 25819/52. Class 83 (4). In a drop hammer whose hammer head 4 is raised by pressure liquid supplied to the underside of a piston 2 and is allowed to fall upon the opening of a return shut-off valve 20 which is closed when the hammer head has fallen, the closing of the valve is effected in dependence upon the striking of a work-piece by the hammer head. The valve may be closed by a device of the kind disclosed in Specification 721,335. The pressure liquid is supplied by a pump 8 which is running continuously, the liquid being by-passed through a pipe 12 by a valve 13 when the piston has been raised. The pump may be of the constant delivery or variable delivery type. A spring-loaded accumulator piston 18 in the supply pipe 7 acts as a shock-absorber. The return shut-off valve 20 is of large bore so as to allow the hammer head to drop freely; a release valve 22 of small bore allows the hammer to fall slowly. Air is compressed in the top of the cylinder to cushion the upstroke. A vacuum is prevented from occurring in each end of the working cylinder 1 by valves 6, 24. A spring may be compressed by the piston during its upstroke.
