Abstract

[Class 135] [Also in Group XXXV] An automatic continuous output regulating device for piston type compressors has the suction valves adapted to be held open during the whole or part of the compression stroke by a power device under the control of a regulating device one part of which is reciprocated by a pressure sensitive device while the other part is mechanically reciprocated in synchronism with the compressor strokes. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the pressure sensitive element comprises a differential member 1 having heads a, b connected to the casing by flexible sealing washers 2, 3. The smaller head a is subject to compressor outlet pressure while the larger head is subject to a reduced pressure produced by admitting compressor outlet pressure through a throttle 6 adjusted by a spring-loaded piston subject to compressor outlet pressure to the chamber beneath the head b, which chamber has an adjustable but normally fixed escape orifice. A piston valve 5 reciprocated by a crank disc works in a ported sleeve attached to the pressure sensitive member to control the supply and exhaust of compressed gaseous medium to a piston 9. Movement of the piston 9 is transmitted to a piston 11 for holding the suction valve 12 open by a column of liquid 10 maintained by a hydraulic accummulator 15 discharging through a non-return valve 14. In a modification the sleeve is reciprocated by the crank disc. In a further modification the piston 9 and associated control is duplicated, two liquid columns fed from a single accummulator being employed to transmit the regulating impulse to a double-acting piston. In the form shown in Fig. 5 electric contacts 20 attached to the pressure sensitive member co-operate with a contract 19 reciprocated by the crank disc to control the operation of an electromagnet 21 acting on the suction valve 12.
