A compressor comprises a two diameter plunger 2, 6 reciprocable in a casing 1 by compressed gas continuously supplied from a source or sources to inlet ports J, E in the casing, so that the gas entering through the inlet port E is increased in pressure by movement of the plunger 2, 6 and is discharged through an outlet valve 4. The compressed gas supplied to the ports J, E enters a chamber I to act on the small diameter end 2 of the plunger and a chamber II to act on the large diameter end 6 of the plunger. The chamber II has an outlet port H closable by a plunger valve 9 urged towards the open position by a spring 10 disposed within the plunger. When the outlet port H is closed by the valve 9, pressure in the chamber II causes the plunger to perform a compression stroke. The valve 9 remains closed during the compression stroke, despite the action of the spring 10, due to the pressure in the chamber II. At the end of the compression stroke the valve 9 is opened by the contact between a projection 7 on the plunger and a shoulder 11 on the valve so that the inlet port J closes and gas in the chamber II passes out through the port H for possible use as a cooling fluid for the compressor. A fresh charge of compressed gas enters the chamber I to return the plunger and thus cause the valve 9 to close the port H and open the port J whereafter the cycle is repeated.
