Abstract

941,753. Portable screwing-up machines. ATLAS COPCO A.B. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41382/61. Heading B3N. A fluid-pressure operated impact wrench for tightening a series of nuts 6 to a predetermined torque comprises means 8 for delivering a measured quantity of fluid to the motor. When the valve 4 is operated to start the wrench, compressed air from a supply 7 moves a piston 11 downwardly to force air in a chamber 19 to the tool. Operation of the motor ceases when a sealing ring 21 on the piston engages a projection 22. When the valve 4 is released, pressure builds up in the space below the piston through a bleed passage 20 in the piston. The piston then returns to its upper position determined by a flange 14 on an adjustable sleeve 13. If a greater quantity of air is required even when the flange 14 is set to its lowest position, a bleed valve 24 is opened by a desired amount. In a modification, the bleed 20 is provided as a passage 20<SP>1</SP> and may include a bleed valve 24<SP>1</SP>. In a further modification, a bleed valve 25, Fig. 2, is provided in the piston 11, the bleed valve being almost closed by contact with the cylinder at the bottom of a stroke. On an upward stroke, the valve opens to its full extent and provides a quick return of the piston. Specification 618,702 is referred to.
