Abstract

741,344. Drilling. MERCER, A. C. Sept. 29, 1953, No. 26682/53. Class 83 (3). A system for controlling the feeding speed of a drill &c. 9 comprises fluid pressure means 5 for moving the drill, the means being controlled by an electrically-operated valve 12 in a circuit which includes a contactor 19 movable in unison with the drill over a series of contacts 22. In operation, a switch 14 is closed manually to advance a valve 3 to admit air under pressure to a piston 5 and to close contacts 24. The piston 5 forces fluid at an increased pressure against a piston 8 carrying the drill 9. The piston 8 carries with it a switch-operating arm 18 and the contactor 19. As the contactor passes off an insulating strip 21 on to one of the contacts 22, a solenoid 23 is actuated to close the valve 12. Fluid then passes through an adjustable orifice 11 to move the drill at a lower feeding speed. When the drill reaches the end of its travel, the arm 18, after a delay, actuates a switch 17 to release the solenoid 15 and open the exhaust line 2. At the end of the fast return stroke the arm 18, after a delay to allow possible indexing of the work, actuates the switch 16 to repeat the cycle.
