1,011,359. Packaging-machines. HAMAC HANSELLA A.G. July 15, 1963 [July 14, 1962], No. 27922/63. Heading B8C. A packaging-machine for the production of filled tubular packages comprises sealing jaws 11, 14 which transversely seal the tube and which draw it downwardly during the sealing action and wherein these jaws are opened and closed in two stages, the greater part of the opening and closing travel being effected mechanically and the last millimetres of travel and the pressure between the jaws being effected pneumatically or hydraulically. Two heads 2 (only one shown) mounted on a vertically reciprocable column 1 guide a bar 3, movable relative thereto, which when vertically reciprocated causes mechanical opening and closing of the jaws 11, 14 by operation of a linkage system 5, 51; 6, 6<SP>1</SP>; 7, 7<SP>1</SP>; 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. The jaws are closed, e.g. to within 2-5 m.m. of one another, by downward movement of bar 3 until links 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are horizontal and then, by admittance of pressure fluid from an electrically-operated valve 17 to a cylinder 15, thereby actuating a piston 16, jaw 14 is pushed against jaw 11. With the jaws closed, column 1 is lowered to draw downwardly a filled portion of tube, Fig. 4, which is simultaneously transversely sealed and then cut by a knife 12 which is displaceable in jaw 11, Fig. 1, by the action of pressure fluid on a piston in cylinder 13. Preferably a feeler 20, Fig. 4, is provided which is coupled to move horizontally with movement of jaw 14. Should a length of uncharged tubing be present the throw of the feeler is sufficient to operate a circuit breaker 23 which prevents current supply to valve 17 and hence complete closure of the jaws and transport of the tube. A circuit breaker NS (Fig. 3, not shown), is operated when column 1 reaches its lower position to cause opening of the jaws. In a modification, when using tubing with printed indicia, a photo-electric device may be incorporated to operate a circuit breaker in the circuit of valve 17 and in this case the opening of the jaws is independent of the position of the column 1.
