Abstract

918,469. Wrapping-machines. LEASURE, W. C. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 4552/60. Class 94(1). In the packaging method of the kind in which a web is drawn over a former to produce a tube, articles to be packaged being placed in the tube during its formation and the tube sealed between them by reciprocating jaws, the former is reciprocated along the tube axis, the jaws moving only normal to that axis. The tube is sealed transversely with the former in its position nearest to the jaws and while the tube is held by the latter moves away to tube the web as the contents is placed in the tube. The jaws are opened before the former changes its direction so that the tube is in effect drawn over and reverses the motion of the contents. The former then returns drawing off the web andplacing the filled tube between the jaws for sealing. In the described apparatus, the former 44 which is combined with a longitudinal seam sealer and carried on a bar 13, is vertically slideable on rods 11, 12 by chain and hydraulic piston means 16, 20-23. The jaws 24, 25 which also sever the tube, are reciprocated horizontally by linkage 29, 30, 33-36 and hydraulic pistons 27. Two webs 40, 41 enter the former simultaneously to produce a double walled package. The apparatus is especially applicable to the packaging of potato crisps.
