Abstract
1,067,166. Packaging machines. SOAG MACHINE TOOLS Ltd. June 24, 1964 [June 24, 1963], No. 39840/63. Heading B8C. A packaging apparatus comprises means for folding a web of sealable wrapping material longitudinally, means for sealing the edges of the web to form a tube, means for introducing articles into the tube, a reciprocable drawing device with clamping means for advancing the tube, means for sealing and severing the tube transversely between the articles, leaving the cut edges sealed, a belt for supporting the packaged articles between the first sealing means and the discharge end of the apparatus, and rollers mounted on the drawing device and so arranged on the belt to form a recess therein to allow the lower jaw of the clamping means to move below the packaged article on the clamping means return movement. A web of heat-sealable packaging material is run off a supply roller 4, round guide and balancing rollers 5, 6, into a channel 8 and around an inner channel 11. The web is folded into a tube by lips 16 (Fig. 2, not shown), mounted on the channel 8. At one end of the channel 11 is a cover-plate 21 above which is a device 15 for sealing the margins 14 of the web. The articles are fed along a conveyer 2 to a feed-box 17, with openable bottom flaps 18 through which the articles are dropped, manually as shown, singly on to the channel 11. Each article is then engaged by the rear flap 30 of a pusher 12 which also has further flaps 28, 29. The pusher 12 reciprocates back and forth and after each forward stroke the flaps 28-30 are swung upwardly to ride over the top of the articles on the return travel, each flap then engaging the next rearward article. The articles are thus fed into the formed tube and to the reciprocating sealing and drawing device 10 where the tube is gripped transversely by jaws 19, 20 which form two seals between each pair of articles so that the packaged articles can be separated by severing between them. During the sealing process the package is drawn along and is supported on a belt 9 which may either be endless passing round rollers 26, 27 or may be fixed at its ends. The belt 9 has rollers 23, 24, 25 mounted on the device 10 forming a recess in the belt so that the lower jaw 20 can be lowered well away from the articles on the return travel of the device 10. If the belt is endless the reciprocation of the rollers moves the belt along, backward movement being prevented by a free-wheel clutch. If the belt is fixed the rollers 23, 24 and 25 slide backwards and forwards along the belt.
