Abstract

945,989. Wrapping-machines. W. C. LEASURE. Dec. 27, 1961 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 46320/61. Heading B8C. Packaging apparatus comprises a former 7 to shape strip packaging material into a tube, a pair of sealing jaws 9, 10 to form transverse sealing seams in the tube at intervals therealong to divide the tube into individual packages, means for moving the sealing jaws into and out of engagement with the tube, means for introducing product into the packages as they are being formed, and means to reciprocate the sealing jaws and the former along the path of travel of the tube whereby they may be moved towards one another with the jaws open and out of engagement with the tube, and away from one another with the jaws closed and in engagement with the tube. In Fig. 1 the sealing jaws 9, 10 are shown heat-sealing and separating two adjacent packages, the jaws and former 7 being at an extreme position. The package 11 drops when the jaws open and jaws and former begin to move towards one another, each for the distance of half the length of a package, Fig. 3, the former meanwhile drawing packaging material from a roll 1 whilst a pair of snubbers 13, which moves with the former, prevents retrogressive movement thereof. Jaws 9, 10 then close again and product is fed to the next package to be formed while the jaws and former move apart to the position of Fig. 1, drawing more packaging material from the roll 1. Jaws and former are opposedly moved by a chain 37 engaging a reciprocating sprocket 36, Fig. 6, operably connected to a motor 32. A tensioning roller 4, Fig. 1, helps to maintain the roll 1 in continuous motion. Specifications 440,328, 913,114 and 918,469 are referred to.
