Abstract
1294567 Form-fill-seal packaging apparatus PACKAGING FRONTIERS Inc 28 Jan 1970 [1 April 1969] 4199/70 Heading B8C A form-fill-seal packaging machine wherein a web is wrapped around a tubular mandrel 1 and subsequently sealed by vertically reciprocating longitudinal seam sealing bars 3A, 3B and two pairs of transverse sealing heads 5A-D to form tetrahedron (Fig. 2) and pillow packages (Fig. 3) is modified to also permit production of gusseted (Fig. 8) or nongusseted (Fig. 6), three side seal pouches and four side seal pouches (Fig. 10). The modifications comprise mounting the pneumatically operated heads 5A-D on a turn-table 59 so that one pair e.g. 5A, B may be arranged in planes parallel to a longitudinal seam L of the tubular web, To produce three side seal pouches, Fig. 6, only the heads 5A, B form transverse seals e.g. E1, E2 in the dwell periods following a package length movement downwards of the tubular web by bars 3A, B. A gusset (Fig. 7, 8) may be introduced into the fold opposite seam L by providing a co-operating grooved mandrel and finger. To produce a four side seal pouch (Figs. 9, 10) only one pair of heads, i.e. 5A, B is again actuated and a second pair of longitudinal seam sealing bars (3C, D, Fig. 9) is provided to seal together opposed sides of a fin produced in the tubular web opposite seam L by a mandrel rib and a pair of part and circular guides. Yokes straddling the mandrel may support the two pairs of bars.
